Learning Points

This course will focus on the dynamics of various death scenes. After completing this training students will be better equipped to.

  • Follow the arrival procedures expected of first-arriving patrol officers

  • Conduct a proper scene assessment and identification of evidence, and question scene dynamics. Locate, document, and package critical evidence based on the type of death investigated

  • Identify injuries to the body, conduct a thorough body examination on scene, and document what evidence the body reveals at the scene level. Define post-mortem changes to a body and how that guides an investigation

  • Conduct an investigation into the death of an infant or child using all modern practices and understand how evidence differs from that in adult deaths.

  • Investigate and interpret intent when investigating a suicide or self-harm death.

  • Recognize staged scenes and when scenes are more likely to be staged or altered.

Course Workbook-Field Resource

Students who register for this course have the option to purchase both the Investigating Infant and Child Deaths Workbook and the Investigating Suicide and Self-Harm Death Workbook. These professionally developed workbooks are designed to be much more than classroom handouts. Throughout the course, they serve as interactive learning guides, providing space for notes, case-based exercises, investigative worksheets, scene documentation examples, and practical activities that reinforce the material presented by the instructor. Long after the training is complete, both workbooks become valuable field and desk references. Investigators can use them to quickly review investigative procedures, scene assessment, evidence recognition, documentation standards, interview considerations, victimology, investigative checklists, and sound decision-making practices when responding to difficult cases. Whether kept in an office, response vehicle, or investigation kit, these workbooks provide practical guidance that supports thorough, consistent, and legally defensible death investigations, making them resources investigators will continue to rely on well beyond the classroom.
