This course will focus on the recovery of buried or scattered human remains. After completing this training students will be better equipped to.

  • Identify appropriate personnel, equipment, and operational planning needs for exhumations and complex recovery operations. While thinking critically about the forensic specialists and resources required for successful case resolution.

  • Properly document, map, and process skeletal recovery scenes in accordance with medicolegal standards Apply excavation and recovery techniques that preserve evidentiary integrity

  • Conduct organized searches for clandestine graves and surface scatter scenes.

  • Strengthen investigative decision-making in cases involving unknown or highly decomposed human remains

Instructor Bio:

Dr. Mark Beary is the consulting forensic anthropologist for the Boone County Medical Examiner’s Office, located in Columbia, Mo. He worked as a professional archaeologist for several years before entering the field of forensic anthropology. In 2005 he received his Master’s degree in Forensic and Biological Anthropology and in 2018 he received his Ph.D. in Anthropology with a focus in bioarchaeology and forensics. He has worked on numerous cases through the Boone County Medical Examiner’s Office over the past ten years. He has also worked directly with local, state and federal law enforcement agencies to recover human remains from outdoor crime scenes and clandestine graves. His professional interests include forensic archaeology and outdoor crime scene recovery; forensic taphonomy, including forensic entomology; development of biological profiles from human skeletal remains; and human skeletal trauma analysis.

Darren Dake is a nationally recognized expert in medicolegal death investigation with decades of experience in law enforcement and coroner operations. He is the founder of the Death Investigation Training Academy and host of the Coroner Talk podcast, providing accredited education to coroners, medical examiners, and law enforcement professionals nationwide. Darren’s instruction focuses on evidence-based practice, investigative integrity, and accurate determination of cause and manner of death. Known for his practical and disciplined approach, he continues to elevate professional standards through teaching, consultation, and ongoing fieldwork in death investigation.
