Learning Points

In this course, students will learn scene investigation, physiology, autopsy findings, evidence interpretation, and death certification considerations around environmental asphyxia and entrapment deaths. After completing this course students will better able to:

  • Explain the physiological mechanisms of environmental asphyxia and entrapment-related deaths, including oxygen deprivation, restricted ventilation, and external compression.

  • Identify and document key scene indicators associated with environmental asphyxia incidents, including grain engulfment, soil collapse, confined-space events, and other entrapment scenarios.

  • Recognize common external examination and autopsy findings that may be present in environmental asphyxia and entrapment fatalities, while understanding their limitations and variability.

  • Integrate scene evidence, environmental conditions, witness statements, and postmortem findings to determine cause and manner of death and support accurate death certification.
