In this course, students will learn................

  • Define environmental death investigations and explain how environmental forces produce fatal physiologic failure.

  • Differentiate mechanism, cause, and manner of death and apply those distinctions to environmental death cases

  • Recognize environmental conditions as evidence and identify critical scene factors that must be documented before they change or disappear.

  • Identify common investigative failure points, including assumptive reasoning, poor documentation, and lack of consultation, and apply strategies to avoid them.

  • Implement administrative and professional standards consistent with national guidelines.

Darren Dake is a nationally recognized expert in medicolegal death investigation with decades of experience in law enforcement and coroner operations. He is the founder of the Death Investigation Training Academy and host of the Coroner Talk podcast, providing accredited education to coroners, medical examiners, and law enforcement professionals nationwide. Darren’s instruction focuses on evidence-based practice, investigative integrity, and accurate determination of cause and manner of death.
