Hi, I'm Darren
I created this Academy for people just like you...
I’ve been in the world of death investigation for over 35 years. I worked as a law enforcement investigator and a medicolegal death investigator for the Coroner/M.E office. I found a few years ago that training specifically for death investigation was limited or non-existent in many areas. My love for teaching and desire to leave this field better than I found it resulted in the academy you are now a part of.
Whether you are here to hone the skills you already have or are ready to get the training you need to start your career, I promise to do all I can to make you a better investigator.

Great accessible resource
Heard about this course in the before times on the coroner talk podcast while I was still in school for pre-med. covid changed my life course entirely and now that degree pursuit is on hold but thanks to this course I am still able to work in my desired field and feel confident even without a 4 year degree

Awesome Preparation!
This course could not be anymore well organized. It is informative, interesting, and makes you want to keep going after every module. This is the best training I've ever enrolled in, and I look forward to using what I've learned here in the future as an MDI. Thank you!

Wonderful
I'm so glad this course is available! I'm a nurse who's never worked in law enforcement and was having a hard time finding a course that didn't have that requirement. I've always been interested in this area and found the course very interesting and full of information. I wanted to make sure I really wanted to work in this area before I applied for jobs and this course solidified that desire and having passed this course even without law enforcement background will help. Thank you so much!!

MDI-Investigator training
This was a very informative and useful course. As an investigator assigned to investigate all death cases within my jurisdiction this class has provided me with additional resources to better prepare me for my assignment. I was disappointed with the certificate provided at the end of the course. Although it had the needed information, I was expecting a more professional looking certificate that could be displayed in my office given the cost of the training. Overall it was a great course with well prepared instructors. I highly recommend this course for those tasked with investigating death scenes.

Nice course, could use some work!
The course overall has good information in it. The lessons are presented very clearly and easy to understand. The course is lighthearted considering the material. It could use some work in a few areas. - During the course you will submit some course work and the program is locked until it’s been looked over by the instructor. This means you can not proceed with the course for a few days. If you are doing this at work, and have set out time to do it, you can’t. It would be nice if the program wasn’t locked up so you could always access it when you have the time to work on it. - I understand the importance of the proof of watch photos but they make it impossible to use the quizzes to study with before you take the end exam. In order to use the quizzes for practice you must memorize or keep notes of the proof of watch questions. This makes the program useless when it comes to studying for the National exam at the end of the course. That part is a bummer because a lot of the information on the exam at the end is very specific to this course. - The “National Exam” that you have the option to take at the end is long, 225 questions. There are a lot of questions that are specific to the geographical area this course takes place in. Since laws for medicolegal death investigators vary by state, the questions should be more universal. An example of that is fetal deaths being investigated after 24 weeks gestation, when the answer is only 20 weeks in California. Do they want the correct answer for me or the correct answer for them? There are also a ton of questions that, in my opinion, are just the instructors opinion on things, what he thinks are important. This makes access to those quizzes ever more important in order to pass the National exam. -Both the course and the exam have a lot of spelling and grammatical errors. - If you chose to make payments on the exam, know that you can pay it off early if you want to. I opted to make payments. I finished the course early but it locked up until I had paid in full. Because I didn’t know I could pay it off early, my coursework sat locked for 2 months. If I would have known I could pay it off early to unlock it I would have. I lost 2 months of time between the course completion and the National exam. I couldn’t study and had time to forget a lot. Like I said, the National exam questions are very specific to this course. All in all, it’s a nice, somewhat easy way to become a medicolegal death investigator.

In-Depth Experience!
It was great touching up on these topics and even getting to learn about things I haven't been exposed to in the workplace before!
